Should the Dallas Cowboys trade for Solomon Thomas?

With reports that the San Francisco 49ers are shopping Solomon Thomas, should the Dallas Cowboys consider trading for the talented defender?

Redemption is a funny thing. If you wait long enough, sometimes opportunities for redemption will reveal themselves. For the Dallas Cowboys, this may be such an opportunity.

This story starts during the 2017 NFL Draft. The Cowboys were still searching for a premier pass rusher, a.k.a. War Daddy. They owned the 28th overall selection in the first round. With it, they chose to label Wisconsin’s T.J. Watt as a bad scheme fit and opted to draft Michigan’s Taco Charlton instead despite having a second-round grade on him.

During his first two seasons in Dallas, Charlton has been a non-factor. Posting only 4.0 sacks in those two years, Taco is now rumored to possibly be on the trading block. As for Watt, he’s averaged double-digit sacks (20.0 sacks total) in his first two years with the Pittsburgh Steelers and was named to his first Pro Bowl last season.

Although it appears the Cowboys made the wrong choice, they are now presented with an opportunity for redemption. During the 2017 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers possessed the third overall selection. They used it on Stanford defensive tackle Solomon Thomas.

Coming out of college, Thomas was deemed worthy of a top-five selection despite being a one-year starter at Stanford. A bit undersized at 6-foot-3, 280 pounds, the former Coppell (TX) high school star was considered to be a rare athlete at his position, possessing all the best qualities you look for in a versatile defensive lineman.

Unfortunately, those attributes have not translated yet in the NFL. Thomas has underwhelmed in his first two seasons in San Francisco, posting just 4.0 sacks in his first 30 games as a pro. And according to Pro Football Talk, the Niners are now shopping the former third overall selection in the 2017 NFL Draft.

The Dallas Cowboys are currently hunting for defensive tackles and Solomon Thomas would fit the bill. Much like Taco Charlton, a new environment could unlock his potential. If a trade agreement could be reached, possibly even including Charlton in some sort of exchange, the Cowboys might actually find redemption for the draft mistake they made two years ago.
