Just how good have the Dallas Cowboys been in the draft?
By Tyrone Starr
With just days before the 2019 NFL Draft, let us take an in depth look at just how good the Dallas Cowboys have been drafting in recent years.
When it comes to the NFL Draft, it is good to be a fan of the Dallas Cowboys. A lot of people will tell you that the draft is an inexact science. Months and months of research, interviews and watching film all cannot save teams from drafting the wrong player.
Everyone misses from time to time. Minimizing those misses and hitting on picks more frequently than you miss is how you avert disaster that can set back your team for years.
The Dallas Cowboys, however, have recently hit a lot more than they have missed. Hopefully this trend continues. Whatever they are doing, they are certainly doing it right. Comparative to the rest of the league, they are in rarefied air when it comes to acquiring talent via the draft.
Recently, I put together a formula to find out which teams have been consistently good and which ones have not been when it comes to the draft. The focus was put on the first three rounds only since 2014.
The point based system I have created gives teams points based on how many years they have had the player on their roster, whether or not he was a starter as well as factoring in Pro Bowl appearances and All-Pro selections.
I also docked teams points if they had traded, released, did not re-sign their selections or if they are no longer in the league. All of these factors were also weighted depending upon what round the player was chosen.
