After many leaks, the NFL season schedule officially dropped on Wednesday night. After taking a peek, things look pretty favorable for the Dallas Cowboys.

The NFL schedules have officially arrived, and with a bang. From the leaks to player and fan reaction, it’s certainly been at the forefront of discussion. Although the common angle when looking at the schedule involves counting potential wins and losses based on opponents, let’s look at the Dallas Cowboys‘ schedule from a different perspective.

One of the first things you look for when looking at the schedule are the divisional games. With six per team, there is something very quirky about the Cowboys divisional matchups this season. As it’s an annual custom seemingly at this point that the Cowboys open up against the New York Giants, that isn’t really that shocking.

When looking at the next week’s game however, you find something that rarely happens that early in the season. The Cowboys Week Two opponent will be none other than their natural rivals, as well as divisional foe, the Washington Redskins. They don’t face another divisional opponent, the Philadelphia Eagles, until Week Seven of the season.

They face the Giants again in week nine, coming off a Week Eight bye, but it isn’t until Week 16 that they see their next divisional opponent. They close the season against the Eagles in Week 16, before a Week 17 matchup against the Redskins in Dallas.

When thinking about divisional games, they are not only some of the toughest and most physical, they are often times some of the most important when it comes to a teams post season hopes.

The advantages in facing divisional opponents in the opening two weeks and the last two weeks are very similar. These weeks lend themselves to talent winning out, the team with the stronger running game winning, and the team with the better defense winning.
