Defensive depth of this year’s draft

The defensive depth of this upcoming NFL draft is extraordinary. So much so, that the common thought is that the most value will be between rounds 2-4. This draft is said to be full of defensive potential, something that the Dallas Cowboys would be well served to capitalize on.

Needing to add to their safety position and along two positions along the defensive front, this particular NFL draft offers a plethora of opportunity. Not only are their players ready-made to fit right into an NFL defense right away, but with the developmental talents of Dallas defensive back coach Kris Richard, there is surely a player or two with tools he can maximize.

In further analyzing the depth of this draft, most draft experts and mock drafts see the defensive front as the strength of this draft. These players are those classified as outside linebackers/EDGE rushers, defensive ends, and defensive tackles.

With most experts seeing around 14 or 15 of the top 50 picks being defensive lineman, and as much as a quarter of the top 100 selected being along the defensive front, the depth of this draft in a position of need is too much to pass up on.

The Cowboys shouldn’t move up, because even at the 58th and 90th picks of the draft, they could snatch a game changer or an NFL starter at the very least.

No matter how you see it, the cost of moving up is too steep. Whatever the cost, it would ultimately affect the depth of a roster that already has a dearth of talent generally and at key positions. This is even further amplified by the fact that you would be giving up opportunities to add young, talented, and cost-effective options from a draft that exactly caters to the teams needs. The case is simple, moving up in this year’s draft simply shouldn’t be an option.
