Dallas Cowboys rumored 30 visits have safety as a priority
The Dallas Cowboys are clearly in the market for a young safety as their rumored 30 pre-draft visitors lean heavy towards the position.
The Dallas Cowboys do not appear to be satisfied when it comes to their safety position. That’s despite the recent signing of veteran George Iloka and that the depth chart is unchanged at the position from last season when the Dallas defense was considered elite.
Due to the trade for wide receiver Amari Cooper, the Cowboys do not possess a first-round selection in the 2019 NFL Draft, which is a mere three weeks away. That doesn’t mean Dallas will not be making a first-round selection if the right deal presents itself.
But with their first pick not currently happening until the second round, 58th overall, the Cowboys are forced to find the best available talent in Day Two. And that player could be at safety. And it’s a position Dallas is apparently deeply considering as they are rumored to be bringing in as many as four college safeties as part of their limited 30 pre-draft visits.
Here is a list of some of the Cowboys’ rumored 30 visitors as reported by Walter Football.
Johnathan Abram, S, Mississippi State
Taylor Rapp, S, Washington
Juan Thornhill, S, Virginia
Khari Willis, S, Michigan State
–
Dawson Knox, TE, Ole Miss
Dax Raymond, TE, Utah State
Jace Sternberger, TE, Texas A&M
–
Emanuel Hall, WR, Missouri
Mecole Hardman, WR, Georgia
Deebo Samuel, WR, South Carolina
–
Damien Harris, RB, Alabama
Tony Pollard, RB, Memphis
Mike Weber, RB, Ohio State
–
Jamal Davis II, OLB, Akron
Dre Greenlaw, OLB, Arkansas
–
Gerald Willis III, DT, Miami
Although this is not a complete or confirmed list, the fact there could be as many as four safeties as visitors is telling. In the past three seasons, the following players have been part of the 30-visits or Dallas Day and then drafted by the Cowboys: Quarterback Dak Prescott, running back Ezekiel Elliott, defensive end Randy Gregory, offensive tackle Chaz Green, linebacker Damien Wilson, linebacker Mark Nzeocha, defensive end Taco Charlton, cornerback Chidobe Awuzie, safety Xavier Woods, linebacker Leighton Vander Esch, and Connor Williams.
Similar to the cornerback position, the Dallas Cowboys have several safeties with expiring contracts after 2019. That includes Jeff Heath, George Iloka, Kavon Frazier and Darian Thompson. Xavier Woods’ rookie deal ends after 2020. So is it any wonder why the team feels like it may have to invest in the position later this month.
