Due to the ongoing stalemate with defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence, the Dallas Cowboys need to finalize a deal for edge rusher Robert Quinn.

When the Dallas Cowboys began their offseason back in January one of their top priorities was extending defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence to a long-term deal. Lawrence remains on the franchise tag as the Cowboys have made little progress towards agreeing on a long-term deal and are reportedly at an impasse.

With the current suspension of defensive end Randy Gregory and the poor performance to this point by former first rounder Taco Charlton, it is imperative Dallas upgrades their defensive end group this offseason.

If they want to do this before the draft, Robert Quinn of the Miami Dolphins is a perfect target. Rumors emerged earlier this month that Dallas had interest in acquiring Quinn from Miami. Since then, things have been pretty quiet on that front. But it is still believed the Cowboys and Dolphins have interest in finding a deal that will work for both sides.

Throughout the course of his eight-year career, Quinn has always been able to get to the passer. In 2013 as a member of the then St. Louis Rams, he was an All-Pro recording a career-high 19.0 sacks. In 2017, his final season with the Rams, Quinn recorded 8.5 sacks in 15 games. Last season he had 6.5 sacks in 16 games with Miami.

After his two injury-riddled seasons in 2015 and 2016, it is clear Quinn is not the All-Pro level player he was a few years ago. But, he still is an above-average pass rusher and would help strengthen the defensive end group in Dallas greatly.

Last season, Gregory recorded 6.0 sacks in 14 games and this is the production Dallas would need Quinn to match. He could easily get to six sacks. And if Quinn is paired with Lawrence on the other side, he could even reach double digits.

With all the question marks about DeMarcus Lawrence’s future in Dallas, making the move and getting Robert Quinn becomes a must. Quinn would provide the Dallas Cowboys with great insurance in case of a worst-case scenario with Lawrence while also making them a much better football team.
