The Dallas Cowboys didn’t make a splash play during the free agency period. But things are going to get hot as the draft approaches. Here are three thoughts.

Probably the biggest news from the Dallas Cowboys so far is that they are heading to Hawaii for a preseason match with the Los Angeles Rams. Just kidding. Sort of.

No, the ‘Boys didn’t add that special safety player, Earl Thomas. In fact, the Cowboys, as expected, have been pretty low-key in their offseason moves. And yes, while Jason Witten is coming out of retirement to rediscover his tight end duties, the news tent in Big D has virtually been silent.

No news is good news, right? Let’s discuss.

April 25, 2019 = The NFL Draft

Just because the Cowboys signed George Iloka to bolster the safety spot, this doesn’t mean the safety positions are done. Yes, we have the 2019 NFL Draft to look forward to. Once again, the Cowboys are keeping their bank transactions clean and looking towards the NFL Draft to stock talent.

This is where the future is built, and the Cowboys don’t make their blueprint a mystery. With the Cowboys still one of the youngest teams in the league, Dallas aims to make young even younger.

The Cowboys need more depth and talent at the safety positions. Also, Randy Gregory and David Irving are out of commission. Let’s hope I don’t have to keep writing those names down the road.

Also, DeMarcus Lawrence is still unhappy, so there’s that. The Cowboys need help at the defensive front line.

Randall Cobb: From Aaron Rodgers to Dak Prescott

I really like this signing. I was quite surprised Cobb chose Dallas to be his next home. He’s not exactly young, but he’s not exactly old either. Also, maybe even more important, he didn’t cost the Cowboys a Cole Beasley-type contract.

The five-ten slot receiver turns 29 this August. The former second-round draft pick comes to Dallas with eight years of experience, all with the Green Bay Packers. For his career, he has 470 catches and 41 touchdown receptions.

Back to Hawaii for a rematch

The Cowboys will play the Los Angeles Rams on August 17 in Hawaii. Five months from now, the men in Big D will line up against the folks who tossed them out of the divisional round. Eight points are what separated America’s Team from possibly reaching the 2018 NFC Championship game. Eight points.

In five months time, things will look very different for both teams. But it’s clear, that for both organizations, the arrow is pointing north. The Cowboys didn’t have enough firepower to hang with the Rams back then, losing 30-22.

The Rams, of course, beat the New Orleans Saints in a controversial no-call that propelled the Rams into the big show, where they lost to the Patriots in the Super Bowl.

Of course, the game in Hawaii won’t mean much, and it is the first preseason game so the starters might not even play. But at least by then, we’ll know if the Cowboys closed the gap and are working towards gaining back those eight (or more) points against the Rams.
