Dallas Cowboys: 15 best free agent acquisitions of all-time
It’s not often when a free-agent find helps to land you multiple Super Bowl wins. That’s exactly what happened after the Cowboys landed safety James Washington.
A Plan B Free Agency find back in 1990, Washington played an important role in Dallas landing them back-to-back Super Bowl victories in the early 1990s.
A sixth-round selection out of UCLA back in 1988, Washington was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Rams. A reserve his first two seasons in the NFL, the young safety was left unprotected by the Rams allowing the young, upstart Cowboys to pick him up via Plan B. Dallas had just finished the 1989 season, going 1-15 under new head coach Jimmy Johnson.
Washington joined the Cowboys and helped turn the team around. His best season came in 1994 when he recorded five interceptions as a 16-game starter. Most fans will know Washington for coming up big on the biggest stage, recording interceptions in two championship games. He also returned a fumble for a touchdown in Super Bowl XXVIII.
