The position the Dallas Cowboys won’t ruin with a free agent

The Dallas Cowboys defense played at an elite level in 2018. Why ruin the chemistry and development of young talent in the secondary with a free agent?

Every off season, rumors begin to associate multiple free agents with the Dallas Cowboys. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones and the front office isn’t being lazy. They quiz coaches like crazy about dozens of players of all shapes and sizes. Recent years have proven that Jones makes headlines with zest, but doesn’t ooze over prized players that require the pocketbook to be unzipped. I applaud him for this approach.

The last free agent I recall getting checks with an excessive amount of zeros from Jones was defensive end Greg Hardy in 2015. I might be a little fuzzy on the details, but Hardy waltzed into Dallas with a one year contract for roughly $11 million dollars. I have a lot of zeal for players talented at blitzing. Pass rushers are always in demand for their ability to zip past dazed offensive linemen and zoom in on a quarterback.

This year, the buzz is over safeties. As I gaze at the current list of free agent safeties, I wonder if any of them are game changers? Can they seize control of games like a czar? As I think about it, it’s a zany idea to believe any free agent safety could jeopardize the current roster spot of future Hall of Famer Jeff Heath. Heath covers more grass than a zebu and plays special teams too.

When I mention special teams play, please note that Heath doesn’t just run down the field during fair catches. He is the ultimate gizmo that oozes greatness. Heath has kicked the ball off the tee during kickoffs, converted fake punts for first downs, kicked field goals and extra points.

In 2017, Heath led the team in interceptions and tied for second in solo tackles. In 2018, still hotter than a steaming plate of orzo, Heath ranked third on the team in combined and solo tackles. Can any member of Cowboy Nation imagine free agent safety Earl Thomas doing any of this?

The Cowboys free safety spot is currently filled by 2017 sixth round draft pick, Xavier Woods. At 23 years of age, Woods is a young, experienced talent entering his third season. I won’t say zero or zilch, but I don’t recall the Cowboys defense allowing many passing touchdowns due to blown coverages. That’s a credit to the communication and chemistry between Woods and Heath in the secondary. It would take a klutz to mess that up.
