According to a mock draft that appeared on the NFL’s official website, the Dallas Cowboys are projected to select a tight end in the third round.

The Dallas Cowboys are still searching for their spiritual successor to Jason Witten, who retired last May. And the harsh reality is, they may never find a future Hall of Famer quite like Witten again. But certainly, the Cowboys are hoping for a bit more consistency from the position in 2019.

Former seventh-rounder Geoff Swaim started nine games at tight end for Dallas last season. He recorded 26 receptions for 242 yards and posted the first and only touchdown of his four-year career so far. A broken wrist ended Swaim’s season prematurely and now the 25-year old is expected to become a free agent when the market opens next month.

That leaves Dallas with Blake Jarwin, Dalton Schultz and Rico Gathers on the depth chart at tight end. Jarwin’s production exploded towards the end of last season, racking up 20 catches for 228 yards and three scores in the Cowboys’ final four games of the year.

Schultz was a fourth-round selection in 2018 who was slow to develop. And Gathers is a former basketball star whose chances of playing a significant role in the NFL seem slimmer than ever.

Although Jarwin is clearly tapped to be the starter this upcoming season, it doesn’t mean the Cowboys won’t pull the trigger on a tight end prospect in the draft.

According to NFL.com Draft analyst Chad Reuter, he believes the Cowboys could land their tight end of the future in the third round in LSU’s Foster Moreau. Here is Reuter’s explanation for his selection of the Senior to Dallas with the 90th overall selection in his recent mock draft.

"“Dak Prescott missed former third-round pick Jason Witten during 2018. Another former SEC tight end, Moreau has the athleticism and blocking ability necessary to be a starter in the league for a long time”"

At 6-foot-5, 255-pounds, Moreau is exactly the kind of tight end the Dallas Cowboys seem to value. An excellent blocker with some room to grow as a receiver, the former Tiger did rack up 46 receptions for 550 yards and five touchdowns in his final two seasons at LSU. Moreau would make an excellent blocker to pair with Schultz and a counter balance to Jarwin’s receiving skills.
