The Dallas Cowboys hit a home run when they drafted Leighton Vander Esch in 2018. Now the rookie linebacker is giving back to his roots.

The Dallas Cowboys fell in love early on in the draft process with Boise State linebacker Leighton Vander Esch last offseason. And despite having a major need at wide receiver, the Cowboys stuck to their guns and selected Vander Esch with the 19th overall selection in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

And the rookie linebacker didn’t disappoint, helping the Cowboys win the NFC East title with a 10-6 record as well as post a playoff victory over the Seattle Seahawks in the Wild Card round. Vander Esch would rack up 140 combined tackles, the third most in the NFL last season and be named to the Pro Bowl as a rookie. It was a legendary start to what could be a Hall of Fame career for the young man known as the Wolf Hunter.

As the Cowboys first-round selection last year, Vander Esch had a total salary cap hit of $2.15 million last season. And the 23-year old recently dropped more than $45,000 on his old high school.

According to B.J. Rains of the idahopress.com, Vander Esch wanted to do something for his high school, Salmon River located in Riggins, Idaho. He decided to help purchase a new weight room. Partnering with Boise Fitness Equipment, the weight room cost around $70,000, with Vander Esch picking up a large portion of the bill.

The new weight room has been open for a couple weeks now and Vander Esch himself has been in there working out most mornings. The generous rookie isn’t stopping at a weight room though. His sponsorship deal with Nike includes getting new uniforms for both the Salmon River football and basketball teams next season.
