Dallas Cowboys‘ defensive tackle David Irving took to Instagram recently. And what the troubled defender had to say will likely shock fans.

The Dallas Cowboys seemed to stumble upon a hidden gem when they signed an undrafted rookie out of Iowa State, David Irving, off the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice squad back in 2015. And after two years of flashing potential, Irving appeared to be on the edge of stardom.

Unfortunately, the past two seasons have not gone as planned for the 6-foot-7, 290-pound defensive tackle. Back-to-back four-game suspensions, once for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy, the other the NFL’s substance abuse policy, have hurt his availability and have been a sign of deeper issues.

In 2017, a concussion further limited Irving to playing in only eight total games. Yet, the talented young defender was still able to rack up an impressive 7.0 sacks in that span.

Last season, off-the-field issues and showing up out of shape hindered the 25-year old in the offseason. Irving played just two games in 2018 as a high-ankle sprain ended his year prematurely once again.

According to David Moore of the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys have no intention of re-signing Irving, who is scheduled to become a free agent next month. The 25-year old Irving took to Instagram recently. And what he had to say will likely shock Cowboys’ fans.

"“I’m in the NFl because I’m great at what I do. I’m not in the NFL because I’m an Eagle Scout , or the perfect model citizen. I didn’t put on a mask or kiss a** to be where I am. Im here on natural ability . This is God’s plan. Not mine. Trust me , I’m adjusting to it as well. Once I step on the field and stop performing , THEN we have a problem .. . So does anyone have anything to say about my play?”"

This statement, more than anything else, might explain why the Dallas Cowboys seem to be willing to part ways with the ultra-talented David Irving. Yes, Dallas is only interested in him because of what he can do on the field. But the greatest ability is availability. That’s something Irving has struggled with the past two seasons and likely the main reason the Cowboys will be parting ways with him.
