The Dallas Cowboys solidified their wide receiver position last year with the trade for Amari Cooper. Does this position still need to be addressed?

When considering the Dallas Cowboys’ biggest needs this offseason, wide receiver is often mentioned. But the trade for three-time Pro Bowl wideout Amari Cooper last year all but solidified their receiver corps. Why would the Cowboys need to address this position again with so many more areas needing attention?

Well, the speculation is the Cowboys could cut their wide receiver corps in half this offseason. Slot receiver Cole Beasley and gadget player Tavon Austin are slated to become free agents next month. So is veteran wideout Terrance Williams as Dallas has now decided not to pick up his option in 2019.

Allen Hurns signed a two-year, $12 million deal last offseason, but the Cowboys could opt out of his second season and save themselves a whopping $5 million doing so. Hurns recorded just 20 receptions for 295 yards and two scores last year.

If Dallas opts to pass on all four, that leaves the depth chart with Cooper, Michael Gallup, Cedrick Wilson Jr., Noah Brown. and Lance Lenoir

It seems unlikely Dallas would opt to part ways with both Beasley and Austin, especially if the latter can be signed to a near veteran minimum deal. And Hurns could also easily be retained as long as he’s willing to rework his current deal. The fact he is currently injured (dislocated ankle, broken fibula) and doesn’t expect to return until August could play a significant role in those negotiations.

But a depth chart of Cooper, Gallup, Wilson Jr., Brown, Lenior and possibly Austin or Hurns seems like a solid group. And one that doesn’t necessarily scream to be addressed in the draft. Instead, the Cowboys might try to find an inexpensive hidden gem or two in free agency as this group seems chock-full of young talent already.
