The Dallas Cowboys have reportedly opted not to re-sign or pick up the option on two former starters, allowing both to hit the free agent market next month.

According to several reports, the Dallas Cowboys have made some critical decisions about the immediate future of two of their former starters, allowing each to hit the open free agent market next month. The Cowboys have reportedly opted to part ways with wide receiver Terrance Williams and defensive tackle David Irving.

Williams, the Cowboys’ third-round selection out of Baylor back in 2013, had a turbulent sixth season in Dallas. Recovering from a broken foot throughout the offseason, a bizarre arrest last May for public intoxication and leaving the scene of an accident resulted in a three-game suspension from the NFL for violating their substance abuse policy.

After playing in just three games last season and recording only two catches for 18 yards, Williams was placed on Injured Reserve due to a foot injury. On Monday, the Cowboys reportedly decided not to pick up the 2019 option on Williams’ contract, making him a free agent next month. The move saves Dallas $2.25 million in salary cap space.

According to ESPN, an unnamed source has indicated that the Cowboys have also decided to move on from Irving and will not re-sign the four-year defensive tackle. The impressive 6-foot-7, 290-pound defender was originally acquired by Dallas off the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice squad back in 2015 after going undrafted out of Iowa State.

The ultra-talented 25-year old has played in just 10 total games the past two seasons due to back-to-back suspensions from the NFL, off-the-field issues and injuries. Irving still has an intriguing size/skill set combination that has resulted in 8.0 sacks in that 10-game span. And that kind of production will likely make him appealing to other NFL teams despite the red flags.
