Dallas Cowboys 2019 draft profile: Antoine Wesley, WR
By Jack Baker
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has proven that he needs weapons around him. Adding Antoine Wesley could help Dak reach his full potential.
After the trade that allowed wide receiver Amari Cooper to become a member of the Dallas Cowboys, fans not only saw an improvement in the offense but the overall team.
Quarterback Dak Prescott has proven many things in his three years in the NFL and one of that being he needs weapons on the outside to help him succeed. So let’s take a look at a player that could make an instant impact on the Cowboys’ offense.
Antoine Wesley, Wide Receiver – Texas Tech
The 6-foot-5, 200-pound wide receiver from Cibolo, Texas busted on to the scene for the Red Raiders last season as a Junior. Wesley hauled in 88 receptions for 1,410 yards and recorded nine touchdowns.
Pros
Wesley already draws attention from defenses for his height is known for best is for his ability to track and adjust to the deep ball downfield. He showed on many occasions last year that he has the ability to make contested catches all over the field as well.
Unlike many receivers with the physical build of Wesley, he is extremely elusive in the open field. With his size and strength, he is able to almost always fall forward and get the extra yards when needed.
Antonie Wesley is a very high energy player who gives it 100% every play, even when blocking, as he is regarded as one of the best blocking wide receivers in 2019 draft.
Cons
A concern for Antonie Wesley is that he had almost no production prior to 2018. With that being said, Wesley was behind two receivers who are on NFL rosters now.
Like many tall receivers in the NFL, Antoine is not known for his speed. He is not terribly slow as his long legs make up for the lack of speed, but he is not a receiver that will leave a defensive back in the dust.
Wesley is not a natural route runner, as he has to rely on technique to get open on a consistent basis. Also, Wesley did not face much press coverage as opposing defenders played off of the line of scrimmage against him due to his height, so it is a question mark to see how Wesley handles getting open when he has someone in his face off the ball.
