Why the Dallas Cowboys will repeat as NFC East Champions

There has not been a repeat winner in the NFC East in the past 15 years. Here is why the Dallas Cowboys will be the first to do it since 2004.

Since the Philadelphia Eagles were back to back NFC East Champions in 2003 and 2004, winning the NFC East in consecutive years has not been accomplished since. After finishing the 2018-2019 season at a 10-6 record, the Dallas Cowboys captured the NFC East title for the third time in five years. I believe the Cowboys are in prime position to accomplish what has not been done in 15 years.

After starting 1-1 versus the division rivals, the Cowboys knocked off the next five NFC East opponents they faced, ultimately leading themselves to the top of the division.

Looking into 2019, I feel very confident saying that the Cowboys have the best overall roster. With that being said, it is critical the Cowboys sign defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence to a long term deal.

Looking at the Washington Redskins, I do not think they have enough weapons on the offensive side of the ball. According to NFL.com, it looks as if quarterback Alex Smith could miss all of 2019 due to the gruesome leg injury he suffered in Week 11 vs. the Houston Texans.

The Redskins will get running back Derrius Guice back in 2019. Guice is a violent downhill back out of LSU who missed all of his rookie season due to a torn ACL he suffered in training camp.

With Alex Smith looking like he might miss a good portion, if not all of 2019, I do not see the Redskins being a threat in the NFC East.

The New York Giants should be better in 2019. Led by running back and Rookie of the Year Saquon Barkley and All-Pro receiver Odell Beckham Jr. the Giants have the potential to be a dynamic offense.

As we all know though, the “Achilles heel” of the Giants is the quarterback play. Whether they decide to go with Eli Manning or a potential high draft pick under center next year, I believe the quarterback play in New York will continue the Giants next year.

The Giants could also lose star safety Landon Collins in free agency. If Collins does decide to walk away from New York, the Giants will need to find true replacements for All-Pro Damon “Snacks” Harrison and Landon Collins this offseason.

I think the Giants will be good very soon, but I believe they are still a year away from contending in the NFC East.

The team I fear the most in this division is the Philadelphia Eagles. I believe they will be hungrier than ever coming into 2019 and will use the momentum they gained at the end of last season.

The decision they have made sticking with quarterback Carson Wentz over Nick Foles will haunt them. For whatever reason, this team just operates better with Foles under center.

I believe Carson Wentz is not as good as he is made out to be. Wentz is not consistently accurate, turns the ball over too much, and cannot stay healthy.

The Eagles have a great roster from top to bottom, and they have with what I believe is the best defensive line in the entire NFL. But Carson Wentz, in the end, will hold this team hostage like he did all of 2018.

The main reason the Cowboys will win the NFC East next season will be because of the young core the Cowboys have formed. A full offseason for young players such as linebackers Leighton Vander Esch and Jaylon Smith, and wide receivers Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup will benefit them greatly, helping them build off their success in 2018.

Only 206 more days till kickoff!

Go, Cowboys!
