Super Bowl 2019 in Atlanta is over. As the Dallas Cowboys prepare for 2019, the rumor is head coach Sean Payton could be in Big D by 2020. Buy or sell?

I know what you’re thinking: Please don’t tease us with Dallas Cowboys news about 2020. The 2019 season hasn’t begun, so let’s skip the chat about 2020. But really, is head coach Sean Payton heading for the Lone Star State in 2020?

523 miles. That’s all that separates the Mercedes-Benz Superdome and AT&T Stadium. The trip could be done under an eight-hour car drive. 523 miles.

Before we get into the possibility of the Cowboys landing in the Payton sweepstakes in 2020, we have to review where the ‘Boys are at in 2019. So far, the Cowboys are committed to Kellen Moore as the offensive coordinator and Jon Kitna is on board as the quarterbacks coach. Head coach Jason Garrett was retained, but his contract was not extended either.

So, it looks like Mr. Garrett is coaching for his job in 2019. Curiously, the Dallas Cowboys elected to remove Scott Linehan and his oh so obvious play-calling for someone within the ranks, his protegé.

Now, can we all suspect that the play-calling in 2019 will mirror 2018? After all, isn’t Moore just a clone of his master from his days with the Detroit Lions?

Maybe. Maybe not.

An outcome of this upgrade for Moore is that the Dallas Cowboys see him as their version of Sean McVay. The NFL is playing copycat at the moment, electing younger coaches for their young and fresh minds. The Cowboys are flirting, and it’s pretty obvious.

Word on the street suggests Moore is some kind of a football genius with a clipboard. Well, I don’t know if scribbles on sticky notes and notepads qualify one as the next Sean McVay, but his one-year of NFL coaching experience should provide some worry.

Think about this promotion. Kellen Moore is still under the age of 30. He turns 30 in July. From 2008 to 2011, he played college ball at Boise State. From 2012 to 2017, he was in an NFL uniform. In 2018, he was the quarterbacks coach for America’s Team, guiding arguably the most difficult position in all of the sports.

Now, he is the offensive coordinator and really, let’s be honest, steps away from gaining a head coaching job if he can actually perform. Honestly, this is all a modern-day version of a Hail Mary from the Dallas Cowboys brass.

If Moore doesn’t pan out, which will certainly collapse the Jason Garrett regime, then the final play is to put all the chips in the Sean Payton sweepstakes.

dark. Next. The top 10 Dallas Cowboys to never win a Super Bowl

It all makes sense. 2018 in some respects, is a Hail Mary for Jason Garrett. If the head coach can’t connect like Roger Staubach back in the day, well, Mr. Jerry Jones better get the checkbook ready because Payton wants (and deserves) his dollar.
