Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones made an impromptu call to a local radio station, hinting about the future of Kellen Moore.

When the Dallas Cowboys parted ways with offensive coordinator Scott Linehan earlier this month, the team made a commitment to improving their offense in 2019. An offense that ranked 22nd in scoring last season, averaging only 21.2 points per game. And although fans would likely prefer the Cowboys look outside their current coaching staff to fill the position, all signs point to Dallas finding their next “OC” in-house.

Despite only being a quarterbacks coach for a single season, 29-year old Kellen Moore is the currently the favorite to be promoted to offensive coordinator. The former Boise State star spent six seasons in the NFL as a backup quarterback, three of them with Dallas. Cowboys tight end Doug Nussmeier is also rumored to be a possible candidate.

But an impromptu interview by 105.3 The Fan by Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones Wednesday may have revealed the team’s plans. The 76-year old unexpectedly called into the Ben and Skin Show to respond to some of the things that were being discussed.

One of the questions Jones was asked concerned Moore and his future in Dallas. Here’s Jerry’s response.

"“The facts are, we think a lot of Kellen [Moore] … The facts are that he is going to really contribute, he, [Marc] Colombo, a lot these guys, with fresh ideas … Jason [Garrett is] going to be making an announcement here real quickly, but make no mistake about it … he’s going to be a key guy in what play is run on that football field – and by key, probably have the ultimate responsibility.”"

At the least, the above revelation means Moore will be heavily involved in the offense moving forward. That would make the most sense as the Cowboys’ next offensive coordinator. And the use of the term “ultimate responsibility” points to the former quarterback becoming the primary play caller as well. There has been some speculation that Garrett might reassume those duties.

It appears the Dallas Cowboys are waiting until after the Super Bowl to make the announcement about their updated staff positions. But it seems like a pretty good bet Kellen Moore is no longer just the quarterbacks coach in Dallas. In fact, it appears Jon Kitna is set to take that role. For fans wanting the Cowboys to hire outside the organization for a new offensive coordinator, it appears that ship has sailed.
