3 upgrades the Dallas Cowboys should consider in 2019
The Dallas Cowboys prefer to keep their own rather than signing veterans in free agency. But here are three positions that could use an upgrade.
Coming off a successful 10-6 season, where the Dallas Cowboys won the NFC East title and posted their first playoff victory since 2014, this offseason’s theme towards the roster seems to be about maintaining the status quo.
Re-signing pass rusher DeMarcus Lawrence, getting a contract extension for wide receiver Amari Cooper and securing the future for others on the current roster appears to be the top priority in Dallas. Still, the team could always use some upgrades.
Here are three positions we believe the Cowboys should look to improve in 2019.
Free Safety
This is an easy one to connect the dots. Seattle Seahawks free safety Earl Thomas figures to hit free agency soon. Based on the Cowboys’ efforts to acquire Thomas last season and the player’s own attempts to let Dallas know he is interested, this should be a match made in free agency heaven.
The monkey-wrench in the works will be the Pro Bowler’s salary demands and the development of third-year safety Xavier Woods. If Dallas balks at the price tag for Thomas, their misplaced faith in Woods as a future defensive star could result in the Cowboys’ front office pushing away from the negotiating table.
Tight End
With Geoff Swaim scheduled to be a free agent come March, tight end might suddenly become a draft priority for Dallas. Of course, that depends on how you feel about current tight ends Blake Jarwin, Dalton Schultz and Rico Gathers. If you believe the next Jason Witten is somewhere on the current depth chart, then you are all set. If not, it’s time to find a difference maker.
Defensive Tackle
All respect to the “Human Log”, defensive tackle Antwaun Woods, but the Cowboys could use an upgrade along the interior of their defensive line. As their final game against the Los Angeles Rams illustrated (273 rushing yards allowed), Dallas needs a stout, one-technique defensive tackle to stuff the run. The Cowboys refuse to address this need in the draft, which means free agency is likely their only avenue for a real upgrade.
