The Dallas Cowboys personnel department has been busy scouting players all season. Well, I’ve been scouting too and here is my pre-combine mock draft.

Right now, the Dallas Cowboys are checking out players at the Senior Bowl to get a better look at players of interest before the NFL Scouting Combine starts in late February. While they are doing that I have done some scouting myself.

Here is my pre-combine mock draft for the Cowboys. Special thanks to Fanspeak.com as I was able to use their On The Clock simulator to help me create this mock.

Rd 2 Pick #59 – Tight End Irv Smith Jr. – Alabama

Career Stats: 58 recs, 838 yards, 10 tds

Irv Smith Jr. is a big and talented tight end from Alabama. Coming in at 6-foot-4, 241 pounds, Smith has the height the Cowboys like in a tight end and he is only a junior. He has the ability to move all over the field to create mismatches. The Cowboys needed to find a threat at tight end and they got one in the talented Mr. Smith..

Rd 3 Pick #90 Safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson – Florida

Career Stats: 161 tackles, 15.5 tfls, 4.0 sacks, 9 ints

Coming in at 6-foot, 207 pounds, Gardner-Johnson is a rangy safety that has the ability to cover and fill holes to stop the run. He has spent time playing in the slot so he has the ability to play man coverage but is better suited for zone coverage. The Cowboys need a safety who has the ability to get his hands on the ball and actually wrap up when he tackles.

Rd 4 Pick #129 Defensive Tackle DeMarcus Christmas – Florida St.

Career Stats: 106 tackles. 11.5 tfls, 3.5 sacks

If you are looking for a strong and physical defensive lineman then Christmas is your guy. Christmas is a 6-foot-4, 309-pound monster that the Cowboys can place in the middle of that defensive line that is hard to move. He also has violent hands which allow him to win against guards and centers and make plays in the backfield. Christmas comes early for the Dallas Cowboys with this pick.

Rd 4 Pick #136 Linebacker Te’von Coney – Notre Dame

Career Stats: 313 tackles, 23 tfls, 7.0 sacks, 1 int

Coney fits the current mold the Dallas Cowboys have with linebackers, Leighton Vander Esch and Jaylon Smith. He is a 6-foot, 240 pound linebacker who is quick on his feet and has the ability to play sideline to sideline. With linebacker Sean Lee mulling retirement and Damien Wilson becoming a free agent the Cowboys need to invest at the position.

Rd 5 Pick #166 Wide Receiver Terry Mclaurin – Ohio St.

Career Stats: 75 recs, 1,251 yards, 19 tds

The Cowboys have decisions to make with receivers Cole Beasley and Tavon Austin becoming free agents. They may be able to keep one but not both and that’s where Mclaurin comes into play. At 6-foot-1, 205 pounds Mclaurin did most of his damage from the slot receiver position. He also has the ability to play special teams and a kick and punt returner.

Rd 7 Pick #243 Offensive Tackle Isaiah Prince – Ohio St.

You can never have enough offensive linemen on your team and Prince could come in and become the Dallas Cowboys swing tackle. Prince is a talented offensive tackle who’s long arms make it tough for defenders to get around him. He plays with power and holds up in the run game and passing game where the Dallas Cowboys offensive line struggled last season.
