Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator will only be a title

It’s apparent the next Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator is already on staff. But behind the title will be a committee run by Jason Garrett.

Apparently the Dallas Cowboys failed to learn from their recent massive failure relying on a committee approach. Just last offseason they tasked a committee to replace the many advantages provided by a premiere receiver.

Fans rightly had high hopes due to the promised playbook overhaul, which was said to include multiple new looks. Instead Dallas trotted out mostly the same stale offense. Only this time without a prime receiving threat to lure from the predictability.

Buckle up, as all signs are pointing to a committee design of the new offensive staff.

Sure, there will be an offensive coordinator in title. Kellen Moore (quarterback coach) or Doug Nussmeier (tight end coach) will receive top billing. Moore will likely be named passing game coordinator, while Nussmeier coordinates the run.

When speaking to reporters this week at the Senior Bowl, Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones all but confirmed the likelihood of promoting these two offensive coaches.

"“We’re very comfortable with him (Moore), obviously. Like I said, we haven’t made any final decisions, but obviously we put him right in as quarterbacks coach. I saw another guy that happened to in Jason Garrett. He stepped right in from being a player to a quarterback coach and went on and did great.” – CEO Stephen Jones"

"“Certainly, some of the more veteran staff members – Nussmeier is one that would come to mind – are certainly available to look and see how we can get better,” – Owner Jerry Jones"

Heck, Dallas may even name them co-offensive coordinators. But make no mistake, the man in charge of the offensive design is, was, and will be head coach Jason Garrett. It will continue to be his playbook sprinkled with a few, new added wrinkles.

NEW COMMITTEE, FAMILIAR FACES, SAME BOSS

Both Moore and Nussmeier were already in the room helping design offensive game plans last season. Garrett calls it a collaborative effort. The new dynamic won’t shift power or strategy away from Garrett because of new titles and adding Jon Kitna.

Moore and Nussmeier won’t be camped out in a room creating a new, cutting edge playbook during the offseason. They’ll add a few tweaks, but no radical design shifts.

It’s been indicated Garrett will call plays, and they certainly won’t include a lengthy collection of innovative options and formations he isn’t very experienced with.

There will be an offensive coordinator named in title only. Two promoted coaches will likely share the passing and running duties. But this is Garrett’s playbook and his calls. As the real offensive coordinator he’ll control the design and play-by-play direction.

Unfortunately for Cowboys fans, Garrett is no less stubborn and controlling when it comes to his offense, than his employer is with personnel. Expecting an overhauled, cutting edge Cowboys offense come Fall is a fool’s errand.
