With the recent news of former offensive coordinator, Scott Linehan, “parting ways” with the Dallas Cowboys, could Jason Witten fill the void?

Last week, it was revealed that offensive coordinator Scott Linehan had “parted ways” with the Dallas Cowboys. Supposedly, head coach Jason Garrett talked to Linehan and they reached a mutual agreement that they were no longer a good fit.

Even though the front office wants to paint it in a politically correct fashion, let’s be honest, Linehan was fired. So logically the next question that will be debated across the “Twitterverse” and beyond will be: Who will be the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator in 2019? One possible answer would be none other than Cowboys’ legendary former tight end, Jason Witten.

Now this might sound like a long shot, and it certainly would surprise most people, however, it is way more likely to happen than the beloved Cowboys’ quarterback Tony Romo making a return.

Romo is currently the lead football analyst for CBS, and doing an exceptional job at it too. He is living a comfortable lifestyle, getting to see his wife and kids every day, and also it helps that he is not getting bashed over and over again by the world (as he did as the quarterback for America’s team). He is respected by almost everyone. Some even say he will go down as the next John Madden of football commentary and analysis.

Witten on the other hand, though he is currently the lead analyst on ESPN Monday night football, is not having the joyride like Romo. Witten’s passion of the game can be a little extreme at times in his broadcasts. And though as a pure fan of football, it might come across as exciting and inspiring, to the average fan it seems a little much.

So if any former Cowboys’ player is coming out of retirement to coach the team, it would be Witten. Witten has always been clear in the fact that he wants to coach football. For somebody that loves football that much, and the comradery and effort that comes along, has to be willing to be the next offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys–right?

For the Cowboys, it might be a smart/safe move. Garrett could become the play-caller, and Witten could help the players inside the offense individually. Witten knows the players and loves the players, but is respected by the squad as well. Also, for Garrett, he could have someone that he trusts at his right hand.

And for quarterback Dak Prescott, who better to have coached you than the future Hall Of Famer tight end that also played alongside you? Witten has insider knowledge on Prescott’s strengths and weaknesses. He knows what Prescott needs to do to excel. Plus, Witten would be excepted by the fan base with open arms. And maybe, Witten could lead the team to the Lombardi trophy– the only shortcoming in his career.

But, even though it would fulfill everyone’s wildest dreams, it probably will not happen. Witten might not want to take on a coach’s work schedule. He would not get to see his children and wife as much, which is a completely valid excuse to turn down the job even if it was offered. And maybe owner/general manager Jerry Jones already has his eyes on someone else outside, or even inside the franchise who he wants to have as the coordinator.

Only time will tell, but hiring Witten would bolster the team with respect, and knowledge, and the fan base with excitement and hope.
