I pen a letter to ESPN First Take commentator Stephen A. Smith, as the Dallas Cowboys prepare to take on the Los Angeles Rams in the playoffs.

In life, there are certain indelible truths such as the sun comes up in the east. Another one is that ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith will find a way to dismiss the Dallas Cowboys and their fans. I may never get a chance to join you on First Take to debate, so I penned this letter.

Smith, you once famously said “what can go wrong will go wrong, it’s just who the Cowboys are.” No doubt you decided a long time ago that an anti-Dallas Cowboys position would enhance your popularity.

Who has forgotten your First Take verbal battle with Hall of Fame Cowboys legend Michael Irvin earlier this season on November 5th when the Tennessee Titans came to Dallas? How many eye rolls did you make when Irvin proclaimed that quarterback Dak Prescott had the best rookie season ever?

The Cowboys may have lost to the Titans that night but Irvin was proven right when he said it was the dawn of a new day. We all know how the regular season ended … with another NFC East title.

Maybe you remember tweeting the following …

This was before the Cowboys game one week later against the Philadelphia Eagles, in which Dallas beat Philly 27-20. Didn’t quite turn out the way you expected.

A few weeks later, you were never more sure in your life that the Cowboys would get their butts whipped when they played the New Orleans Saints. Not only did Dallas stop the Saints’ roll, New Orleans regressed by averaging 15 points per contest less after that game for the rest of the season.

After the ‘Boys beat the Seattle Seahawks in the playoffs last weekend, ESPN’s own Will Cain challenged you on another episode of First Take. He asked you for your deadline so that you would stop holding onto your “I told you so card” for when the Cowboys will lose.

You are famous for saying that “it’s all going to come to a crashing end” but you never really say when. You always leave yourself an out and say it will be next game.

So it is certain that one day you will be right as the Cowboys won’t go undefeated for eternity. But until that day, you continue to make yourself the fool. Your Cowboy-hating shtick plays well since football fans either love the ‘Boys or love who is playing them.

Here are a few more indelible truths for you to consider:

  • The Cowboys, at 0.573, have the highest regular season winning percentage in the history of the NFL
  • America’s Team has won five Super Bowls with only the Pittsburgh Steelers winning more
  • Dallas, with 21 seasons from 1965 to 1985, owns the record for most consecutive seasons with a 0.500 or better record.

So, Mr. Stephen A Smith, I am looking forward to your next opportunity to apologize for being wrong about the 2018 Dallas Cowboys. The floor is yours.
