Dallas Cowboys: A win Sunday would secure Jason Garrett’s job
Sitting at 7-5 and in first place in the NFC East, a win Sunday would all but secure Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Jason Garrett his job next season.
Coming into Sunday’s matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles, the Dallas Cowboys sit in a good spot. With a 7-5 record and a win over Philadelphia already this season, a victory on Sunday would all but secure Dallas a spot in this postseason this year.
According to FiveThirtyEight, an NFL playoff simulator in the Cowboys beat Philly this weekend their odds to win the NFC East rise to 97 percent and their odds to make the playoffs all together rise to 98 percent.
Beating the Eagles would give Dallas essentially a three-game lead over Philadelphia as they would hold the tiebreaker with two head-to-head wins. So put pretty simply, if the Cowboys win on Sunday they are going to make the playoffs.
Now while this is obviously an extremely pivotal game to see if Dallas can turn their season around and all but secure a playoff birth, it may be even more important for head coach Jason Garrett.
Garrett has been under more scrutiny this season than any since he took over the helm in 2010, and after the team started 3-5 many thought this was finally the year Garrett would get the ax. As his teams always have done, Garrett’s guys did not quit and the recent four-game winning streak has completely turned around the Cowboys season.
If Dallas is able to pull out a win Sunday and at the very least makes the playoffs as NFC East champs, Garrett will secure his job and have every right to. If he is able to lead this team back from the dead to the playoffs, that will speak wonders to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. In his tenure in Dallas Garrett has been beloved by Jones and has kept his job throughout several tumultuous seasons.
It may not be the answer that many Cowboys fans want to hear, but Jones really does love Garrett. He has remained loyal to him throughout all these years and this season may finally get to see his loyalty pay off. Although the season did start out very rocky and things are far from perfect, if Garrett is able to pull off a win Sunday he deserves a lot of credit for what this team has been able to do this season.
In recent memory, the Cowboys have been a team that has never really come back from a deficit like they had this season. Since 2014 the team has either been really good or really bad with last year being an outlier where they never were able to come back and get into the playoff picture. Garrett has kept his team believing and his team has completely changed the narrative of this season in just one month.
If the Dallas Cowboys come out Sunday and play the way they have been of late and all but lock up the NFC East title, I got bad news for you Jason Garrett haters. The man is going nowhere.
