Cowboys vs. Saints: Can Dallas really win this game?
The 6-5 Dallas Cowboys face off against a 10-1 New Orleans Saints Thursday night. It won’t be easy, but Dallas does have the tools to pull off an upset.
Over the course of the past three weeks, the Dallas Cowboys have been playing their best football of this 2018 season. After losing to the Tennessee Titans and falling to 3-5 on the season, it looked like a slim chance of Dallas climbing back into the divisional race. The Cowboys themselves shattered this idea, winning three straight and taking over possession of first place in the NFC East.
Dallas has played very solid football the past three weeks, and have gotten back to their identity of running the football down teams throats. Running back Ezekiel Elliott has had three straight outstanding weeks reclaiming the NFL rushing lead.
Quarterback Dak Prescott has not turned the football over in the past three games and has found a connection with new wideout Amari Cooper, and the Dallas defense has continued their outstanding play we have seen all season long.
Things are looking up for the Cowboys, but this Thursday they have to face arguably the best team in the NFL in the New Orleans Saints. The Saints come into this matchup on a 10 game winning streak and with an overall 10-1 record on the year. New Orleans has always been known for having a great offense, but this year they are doing it on both sides of the ball.
The Saints lead the league in points per game average at 37.2 a game, throw for 283 and run for 133 a game, and their defense is number one in the league against the run allowing only 73 rushing yards a game.
Drew Brees the Saints quarterback is the M.V.P. front-runner, throwing for over 3,000 already this season and 29 touchdowns to just two interceptions. Running backs Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram both are averaging almost five yards per carrying, and star wideout Michael Thomas already has surpassed 1,000 yards receiving to go with eight touchdowns on the year.
New Orleans defense has gotten superb play from interior defensive lineman Sheldon Rankins who has seven sacks on the season. Linebacker Demario Davis leads the team with 54 total tackles, and their secondary led by Marshon Lattimore has really improved as the season has gone on.
Overall, it’s easy to see the Saints are one of if not the best team in the NFL, and defeating them will be a tall task for this Cowboys team. If Dallas wants to shock their doubters and walk out of Thursday night with a win, there are a few things they have to do.
