How the Dallas Cowboys outperformed the NFC East on their bye week
The Dallas Cowboys were busy during their bye week. So busy that they were able to make gains against the rest of the NFC East and here’s how.
While the standings don’t show it the Dallas Cowboys came out as winners this weekend. During their bye week, the Cowboys were able to make a few moves to better their team while the rest of the NFC East focused on playing football.
The trade of wide receiver Amari Cooper and it has been made pretty clear how he helps this offense with this big play threat. The firing of Paul Alexander is going to make this team better.
The Cowboys were also able to bring back former offensive line coach Hudson Houck. Houck who had two stints with the Cowboys from (’93-’01) and (’08-’11) will assist the new offensive line coach Marc Colombo in fixing the damage done by Alexander. Houck was with the Cowboys Super Bowl wins in ’93 and ’95.
Now on to the reason why the Cowboys have made gains against the rest of the NFC East without winning a game. Let’s start with the division-leading Washington Redskins who traded for safety Ha Ha Clinton Dix. This trade while it is great is on paper but when you look at what they gave up for a player that isn’t a guarantee to be there next year as he will be a hot free agent this offseason. It’s a bad move. They should have tried to add a receiver instead.
Same goes for the Philadelphia Eagles giving up a high draft pick for a rental in the 30-year-old Golden Tate. The Eagles won’t be able to afford Tate next season and they did nothing to address the running back position which was really needed.
Finally the New York Giants, they decided that it was time to pack things up for the season and start planning for the draft trading away cornerback Eli Apple. That really wasn’t much of a shock but the trade of defensive tackle Damon “Snacks” Harrison took everyone by surprise. This trade weakens a defensive line that was pretty good at stopping the run. Mainly because of Harrison up front.
In the end, the Dallas Cowboys gave up a lot for Amari Cooper but have a receiver they can afford to keep next year and beyond. They also admitted their mistake with Paul Alexander and in doing so gave the offensive line a chance to right the ship. They also gave the team a brighter future than the rest of the NFC East.
