Dallas Cowboys: Legend Gil Brandt to enter Ring of Honor
The Dallas Cowboys will induct former vice president of player personnel Gil Brandt as the newest member of the team’s Ring of Honor.
Outside of being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the highest honor a former member of the Dallas Cowboys can receive is being placed in the team’s Ring of Honor. As of now, there are only 21 members of this ultra-exclusive club. Soon, there will be 22.
On Friday, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones announced that former team executive Gil Brandt will be inducted into the Ring of Honor. Brandt’s induction ceremony will be at halftime of Dallas’ Thursday night matchup against the New Orleans Saints at AT&T Stadium on November 29th.
The 85-year old Brandt spent 29 years with the Cowboys organization starting with the team’s inaugural season in 1960. He served as the team’s vice president of player personnel and developed many of the scouting techniques NFL franchises use today. Brandt currently works as a senior analyst for NFL.com and is a host for SiriusXM NFL Radio.
Here’s what Brandt had to say about his feelings when he first found out about his enshrinement into the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor.
"“When Jerry called me earlier this week to tell me he was adding me to the Cowboys ROH, I can’t tell you how overcome I was with pride and gratitude. And happiness. It was on par with walking off the field after winning the Super Bowl. Thank you all for your heartfelt support.”"
Ironically, Brandt helped to draft or sign many of the current Ring of Honor members, which features a total of 19 players and two non-players (head coach, general manager).
The other members of the Cowboys Ring of Honor are: Bob Lilly (DT), Don Meredith (QB), Don Perkins (FB), Chuck Howley (LB), Mel Renfro (CB), Roger Staubach (QB), Lee Roy Jordan (LB), Tom Landry (HC), Tony Dorsett (RB), Randy White (DT), Bob Hayes (WR), Tex Schramm (GM), Cliff Harris (S), Rayfield Wright (OT), Troy Aikman (QB), Michael Irvin (WR), Emmitt Smith (RB), Drew Pearson (WR), Charles Haley (DE), Larry Allen (OG), and Darren Woodson (S).
Gil Brandt is also a contributor finalist for possible induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this year. The selection committee will vote the day before Super Bowl LIII to determine whether he is actually elected to the Hall.
