Dallas Cowboys sign a former 2016 third rounder at safety
The Dallas Cowboys could use some help in their secondary. They found some on Tuesday, signing a former 2016 third-round selection at safety.
Boise State South. That’s the term some call the Dallas Cowboys in light of the number of former players that reside on the roster from the Idaho-based university.
That list of alum includes defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence, 2018 first round selection linebacker Leighton Vander Esch, defensive tackle Tyrone Crawford, 2018 sixth round selection wide receiver Cedrick Wilson, and former backup quarterback turned QB coach Kellen Moore.
Now you can add another name to that growing Boise State alumni list. On Tuesday, the Cowboys signed former 2016 third-round selection, safety Darian Thompson onto their active roster off the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad.
A four-year starter coming out of college, the 6-foot-2, 211 pound Thompson was considered a downhill safety with playmaking abilities, having recorded a whopping 19 career interceptions at Boise State. Selected in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the New York Giants, a Lisfranc injury ended Thompson’s rookie season just two games in.
Last year, Thompson returned to the Big Apple and started all 16 games of his sophomore campaign for the Giants. He posted 75 combined tackles, six pass defends and an interception in 2017.
Following a coaching change in New York and suffering through a hamstring injury through most of August, New York surprisingly cut Thompson with a waived/injured designation. He cleared waivers and was signed to the Cardinals’ practice squad just last week.
Now Thompson is headed to Dallas, as the Cowboys could use some help shoring up their defensive secondary. In order to make room for their newest defender, the team opted to part ways with safety Ibraheim Campbell who played mostly special teams.
The Dallas Cowboys also signed cornerback C.J. Goodwin from the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad. And Dallas released 2018 seventh-round running back Bo Scarbrough and re-signed Darius Jackson onto the practice squad in his place.
