Have the Dallas Cowboys lost Travis Frederick for the season?
Following his recent diagnosis of Guillain-Barre Syndrome, the Dallas Cowboys have opted to move All-Pro center Travis Frederick to injured reserve.
This offseason came with a lot of change for the Dallas Cowboys. The team opted to part ways with longtime wide receiver Dez Bryant back in April. A month later, future Hall of Fame tight end Jason Witten suddenly retired. But the biggest blow of all might have been the revelation that All-Pro center Travis Frederick was battling the autoimmune disease Guillain-Barre Syndrome.
Known for being the centerpiece of the Cowboys dominate offensive line for the past five seasons, Frederick hadn’t missed a single game during his tenure in Dallas prior to this year. But the four-time Pro Bowler has been sidelined through the first four games of this season, as he continues to experience numbness in both his hands and feet.
The Cowboys kept Frederick on the active roster hoping he’d be able to recover soon. But through the first quarter of the season, very little progress has been shared with the media.
According to the Dallas Morning News’ David Moore, the Cowboys have now decided to place Frederick on Injured Reserve (Reserve/Non-Football Illness). The soonest he would be able to play for the team would be Week 15 against the Indianapolis Colts. But there seems to be a real possibility he is lost for the season.
Veteran backup center Joe Looney has played admirably in the place of Frederick through the first four games of the regular season. Looney’s play, although nowhere near Pro Bowl-level, has been sufficient enough to the point where it likely makes the Cowboys comfortable enough to make this move now.
Moving Travis Frederick to IR will allow the Dallas Cowboys to bring back defensive tackle David Irving to the active roster. Irving was suspended for the first four games of the season due to violating the league’s substance abuse policy. He was suspended for the first four games last year as well, but for a performance-enhancing drug violation.
