I’m Not Sold On: La’el Collins, Right Tackle

There were initial concerns when the Cowboys opted to switch La’el Collins from left guard to starting right tackle to start the 2017 season. But the former undrafted free agent began to excel after a shaky start.

Touted as yet another possible Pro Bowl-level talent at his new position, the sky was supposed to be the limit for Collins in his second-year at right tackle. Yet, with a new position coach in the legendary Paul Alexander hired over the offseason, the 25-year old tackle has regressed.

Pro Football Focus ranks Collins as the 49th best tackle in the NFL so far this season, with a very low rating of 59.6 in pass blocking. He’s allowed eight total hurries, nine quarterback pressures and a sack through three games. Collins has also had four penalties called against him, two of which were declined.

Based on what we saw from La’el Collins last year, you have to believe he can improve as the season progresses. But his poor play early has been amplified due to the fact Dallas is playing without All-Pro center Travis Frederick and has a second-round rookie in Connor Williams starting at left guard.
