Dallas Cowboys re-sign Deonte Thompson; lose two others
The Dallas Cowboys continue to shape their 53-man roster after Saturdays “not so” final cuts. They made several moves on Monday. We break them down.
The Dallas Cowboys trimmed their roster from nearly 90 players to only 53-men on Saturday. But that didn’t mean the moves were over. The next day, Dallas added two players whom they claimed off the waiver wire. This caused a corresponding move of releasing two of their own.
That brings us to Monday. The most significant move made by the Cowboys could be the one they decided not to make. Dallas opted not to place All-Pro center Travis Frederick on Injured Reserve as he continues his battle with the autoimmune disease Guillain-Barré Syndrome. This indicates the Cowboys hope to have Frederick playing again by Week Eight of the regular season or earlier.
The Cowboys did, however, place wide receiver Noah Brown and defensive tackle Datone Jones on Injured Reserve, opening up two spots on their 53-man roster. One of those spots was filled by wide receiver Deonte Thompson.
Thompson’s release on Saturday was a calculated move by the Cowboys as he’s a vested veteran. That means he became a free agent and was not subject to the waiver wire. This fact allowed the Cowboys to leave Brown on the 53-man roster for one day, not exposing him to the waiver wire where another team could claim him.
Unfortunately, their plan to replace Datone Jones on the roster did not go as well. Dallas apparently intended to bring back defensive tackle Brian Price in Jones’ place. But Price was exposed to the waiver wire on Sunday and ended up being claimed by the Oakland Raiders. Now, the Cowboys have to find someone else to fill that open spot.
Dallas could choose to promote someone from their practice squad onto the final-53 in place of Jones, but it will not be running back Darius Jackson. The former sixth-rounder was signed off the practice squad on Monday and added to the Green Bay Packers’ active roster. In Jackson’s place, Dallas added rookie running back Bo Scarbrough to their practice squad.
