Dallas Cowboys: 3 surprise players who cracked the 53-man roster
Linebacker Chris Covington
As the second linebacker drafted, Covington was already going into camp fighting for a spot in one of the deepest position battles.
A former quarterback turned linebacker, Covington is raw and lacks polish; but is extremely athletic and bright.

Had he gotten a chance to play the majority of camp and preseason, there would be no doubt in my mind that he would have made it more publicly known how much potential he really has.
But Covington was suffering from bronchitis for the majority of camp and only was able to get work in the last few weeks.
Because of this and the depth at linebacker, no one expected him to make the team as the seventh linebacker.
Also because of his low draft status and minimal film, I thought that he would be a great candidate for the practice squad.
In the final preseason game, Covington showed his speed, special teams ability, and the all-around potential to grow into a contributor.
I guess this is all the team needed to see to sneak him onto the roster.
These three guys were not popular choices to make the 53 man roster, but the coaching staff saw something they liked in all of them. Let’s hope these guys can contribute or step into a larger role if called upon this season.
