Coming into the year with the idea of Jourdan Lewis and Anthony Brown duking it out to win the nickle/ slot cornerback job sounded like a solid plan.
Lewis might have been the Cowboys best corner last season and Brown has flashed at times and played pretty okay inside late last season. Both players haven’t had the best training camp or preseason as both have been beaten repeatedly.
The safety position has been hit by the injury bug, and that’s after the position group was already considered a weakness. Kavon Frazier has a separated shoulder and Xavier Woods has a bad hamstring. The Earl Thomas chatter is only going to get louder.
Chaz Green has put some pretty bad football together this preseason. The Cowboys offense was a disaster in games last year without Tyron Smith and would struggle if he were forced to miss time again. Cameron Fleming was brought in to be the swing tackle, and he needs to play better than what Green has shown us.
The Ugly – Injuries
Every team has to deal with injuries. The Cowboys were hit hard with the loss of Frederick as he is out indefinitely with Guillan-Bare Syndrome. The news is better for all-pro right guard Zack Martin but he has missed time and is trying to make it back in time for week one.
As mentioned earlier both safeties, Kavon Frazier and Xavier Woods, are out and also trying to get ready for the start of the season. Rookie Leighton Vander Esch has also missed valuable reps as the season approaches.
After three preseason games, there’s still some major question marks on offense but the defense looks like they may be able to help carry the team. Losing key offensive lineman is definitely not ideal, but this unit could still be a team strength, and a Frederick return would be huge.
The Dallas Cowboys look like a team that will run the ball and play solid defense and hope for a third-year leap from their quarterback in a “Dak friendly” offense in 2018.
