Dallas Cowboys: 3 players destined for the practice squad
The Dallas Cowboys are getting close to cutting down the roster to the final 53. Which guys will make the team and which guys will be on the practice squad?
The Dallas Cowboys have been through two weeks of the preseason and have looked very good as a starting unit. However, whether due to injury or competition, there have been a few pet cats that seem like they are not yet ready to contribute on Sundays.
These guys seem destined for the practice squad and must develop further to become guys who stick on the 53-man roster.
Mike White, Quarterback
White was drafted in the fifth round as a guy with an NFL caliber arm and room to develop into a viable starter one day. Unfortunately, White has looked overwhelmed and has been slow in releasing the ball and diagnosing defenses. The team’s reserve offensive line has played badly, and their struggles have contributed to leveling off Cooper Rush‘s play as well as White’s issues.
Regardless, White seems to be a tick late on everything he does and can look overmatched at times. If White’s abilities are indeed being masked by the poor line play, then this is a blessing in disguise as the team should be able to get White on the practice squad safely.
Bo Scarborough, Running Back
Scarborough was a big-time recruit at Alabama who flashed several times but never was able to corral the starting job. Drafted to be a third back and late game punisher, Scarborough seemed to give fans a glimpse of that role in week one of the preseason. However, his big run and 1-yard touchdown made an average performance look better than it was.
With an abysmal game two where he also suffered an injury (has been injury prone before in his career), Scarborough had four carries for negative two yards. Including his nine carries for 33 yards in game one, Bo is averaging 2.4 yards per carry.
Again, the reserve line has been bad, but Scarborough looks tentative and spends too much time trying to go east and west as opposed to downhill like his strengths would seem to suggest.
With a newfound injury as well as Darius Jackson’s reemergence as the shifty and powerful runner we saw a few preseasons ago, Scarborough looks like he is on his way to the practice squad.
Chris Covington, Linebacker
With the depth of this years draft class and linebackers so far, Covington seems like the forgotten man this training camp. Battling bronchitis for most of the time, Covington has had a hard time getting on the field to show what he can do. As a raw quarterback turned linebacker, Covington has a lot to learn before he can contribute.
Due to the depth of the linebacking corps and its potential status as a strength of this team, the front office may decide to only keep five guys as opposed to the usual six or seven.
Because this unit is deep, young, talented, and athletic enough to play special teams, Covington becomes just a body and a valuable roster spot. Expect him to be stashed away for another year on the practice squad for a chance to make the team next year.
**Honorable Mention: Noah Brown, Wide Receiver
Keeping young guys like these on the practice squad is a blessing for the Cowboys. As three guys with talent and youth, the team will be very lucky to have them stashed away to develop on their potential. If these guys don’t make significant leaps by the end of the preseason, expect them to not make the 53-man roster.
