Dallas Cowboys: 5 players who earned their Star vs. Bengals
Following the Dallas Cowboys second preseason game of the year, and the team’s home opener, here are five players that earned their Star Saturday.
The Dallas Cowboys played the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday night, in their preseason home opener at AT&T Stadium. It was an exhibition matchup that ultimately resulted in a 21-13 loss, the Cowboys second defeat of the preseason in as many games.
But this time of year serves more as a job interview for fringe players rather than a true glimpse of how a team will perform when the games actually count. So with that in mind, here are five Cowboys we believed really earned their jobs and their Star against the Bengals in Dallas’ second preseason contest.
Taco Charlton, DE
In his second season in Dallas, the Cowboys 2017 first round selection out of Michigan continues to show signs of positive development. Recording three tackles, a sack and forcing a fumble, Charlton was the team’s top defensive force against the Bengals. It’s was a much-needed performance from a defensive end that has been struggling to separate himself from the pack since day one.
Chidobe Awuzie, CB
If there were any questions about the 2017 second round pick’s status as a starting cornerback for the Cowboys, they were erased on Saturday night. Awuzie’s one-handed interception at the end of the first half was the highlight of the night and showcased his ability as a playmaker.
Darius Jackson, RB
With rookie running back Bo Scarbrough going out with a hip injury, his absence allowed Jackson to put on a show Saturday night against the Bengals. The former sixth-rounder racked up 42 rushing yards on six carries. Jackson also recorded four catches for 22 yards. If the Cowboys decide to only carry four running backs on their active roster (including a fullback), then there could be a real battle brewing between Scarbrough and Jackson for that final spot.
Joe Looney, C/G
Give a lot of credit to career backup Joe Looney for holding down the fort at center for most of the game against the Bengals. Playing in place of All-Pro center Travis Frederick, Looney was able to provide consistent play and be an anchor for the line when their performance got shaky. The Cowboys now know they have quality depth on the interior of their offensive line moving forward.
Randy Gregory, DE
Although Gregory did not record a single stat on the stat sheet, the fact he was even on the field Saturday night was a major victory for the 25-year old. After serving a year-long suspension for substance abuse, the former second-rounder made his triumphant return to the NFL Saturday night and actually play well for someone who has been away from the game for that long. Expect to see a lot more of Gregory in the Cowboys next two preseason contests as he attempts to get back into game shape.
