Dallas Cowboys: Why Bo Scarbrough is a lock to make the 53-man roster

The Dallas Cowboys can’t hide Bo Scarbrough enough to tuck him on the practice squad. This seventh-round draft pick is now a lock to make the final roster.

One of the things that I actually enjoy about the Dallas Cowboys NFL preseason is the position battles. Usually, there’s the unknown player that joined the team as an undrafted free agent and ended up with a spot on the 53-man roster. A few, like the great safety Jeff Heath, have worked hard to become starters at their positions.

This year, my attention was captured by a solid player that isn’t going to capture the starting spot. That player is Bo Scarbrough, the running back from Alabama that the Cowboys selected with their seventh round pick (#236 overall).

Being drafted by the Cowboys may have been a “gift and a curse” situation. As an NFL running back, it would be great to run behind the Cowboys offensive line. The Cowboys are recognized as having one of the best, if not THE best offensive lines in the NFL.

The Cowboys also have one of the best, if not THE best running backs in Ezekiel Elliott. To make matters even worse, the Cowboys traded a sixth-round pick to acquire wide receiver Tavon Austin. A wide receiver isn’t a big deal to a running back, but the front office and coaching staff consider Austin to be the next “Slash” type player.

There have been talks of Austin playing wide receiver, running back, kick returner, punt returner, point guard, goalie and designated hitter. If Austin thrives at being the versatile weapon in the Cowboys offense, it will equal fewer opportunities for Bo Scarbrough.

It’s too late to hide Bo from other teams after he broke a tackle and scampered 28 yards down the sideline in his debut preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers. If they can’t hide him, which means the Cowboys will be unable to tuck him away on the practice squad.

Yet, he’s not going to challenge Elliott for playing time during the season (unless he becomes a touchdown vulture). That’s why it would be great for the coaching staff to let Scarbrough run wild during the preseason.

I enjoy seeing the young guys have fun and I hope the coaches feel the same way. It’s made this non-competitive group a lot of fun to watch.

Run Bo, Run!
