Dallas Cowboys: 2nd youngest NFL team, a salary cap update

The Dallas Cowboys are currently the second youngest team in the NFL and will have ample cap space for the upcoming season.

The Dallas Cowboys are officially the second youngest team in the NFL. According to Spotrac, the Cowboys have an average age of 25.14. The Cleveland Browns are the youngest team with an average age of 25.13. The oldest team in the NFL is the Atlanta Falcons who have an average age of 26.67.

The Cowboys are likely to carry only three players over the age of 30 to their active roster for Week 1 vs the Carolina Panthers. The team’s long snapper L.P.Ladoceur is 37-years old and the oldest player on the Cowboys roster.

Dallas Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee, is 32 years old, which makes it all the more reasonable how many off days he has received at training camp. The Cowboys kicker Dan Bailey is 30-years old and is the last player 30 years or older likely to make the roster.

In comparison to year’s past injury reports out of Cowboys training camp in Oxnard have had a less daunting look. That is until Wednesday nights practice where wide receiver Tavon Austin tweaked his hamstring and rookie linebacker Leighton Vander Esch strained his groin.

There have been unfortunate injuries but the amount of soft tissue injuries seems less this year. Of course, there have been setbacks and limiting veterans such as Lee and left tackle Tyron Smith assuredly helped lower the injury risk, but a youthful roster likely has resulted in a healthier roster.

Salary Cap Update

Currently, the Dallas Cowboys are 16th in the NFL in salary cap space. They have $10,502,312 dollars in cap space, again according to Spotrac. The New York Giants have the least amount of cap space in the NFL with only $116,750 dollars available.

The Cleveland Browns possess the most available cap space with $52,564,831 dollars free. It is likely former Cowboy Dez Bryant signs with Cleveland this weekend, which will change their cap situation and more than likely make the Cowboys the youngest team in the NFL.

Right now the Cowboys have the second most dead money in the NFL with $25,479,94 dollars tied up in former players (Tony Romo, Dez Bryant, Orlando Scandrick and a few other regrettable free agent acquisitions).

Fortunately, almost all of the current dead money comes off the books next year and the Dallas Cowboys will have $36.8 million in salary cap space. With the available space, the Cowboys front office will be free to re-sign Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence and potentially quarterback Dak Prescott.
