Dallas Cowboys: The good and the bad from the first preseason game
By Broe Reeve
With the Dallas Cowboys first preseason game in the books, here are 10 takeaways, both the good and the bad, from the loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
The Dallas Cowboys had their first preseason game on Thursday night against the San Francisco 49ers. A lot of people think preseason is meaningless but I beg to differ.
With an eye toward training camp and sifting through the coach speak about the team, you can really get a feel about how the players are performing when the bullets start to fly.
With some starters like Ezekiel Elliott and Sean Lee staying on the sidelines, most others got in a couple series if not more. This being the first preseason game, the backups and guys trying to just make the team get most of the playing time.
While the starters will play more in the next preseason game, we can still get a snapshot of what this team is and what to expect in the upcoming season.
The Good
#1. Dak Prescott played well
After a sophomore slump last season, a lot of fans have been questioning if Dak is the future of the franchise. In his only series and without Zeke, he went 3 for 3 for 39 yards and a touchdown. After an off-season working on his mechanics, Dak looked at home dropping back and surveying the field. This offense is supposed to be about throwing to who is open, and the Cowboys quarterback did just that.
#2. The defensive end position is deep
DeMarcus Lawrence looks like he’s in midseason form as you would expect. But Taco Charlton, Charles Tapper, and rookie Dorance Armstrong were all able to get pressure on the quarterback. With Randy Gregory set to join the rotation, this is a deep position group.
