Dallas Cowboys: Five biggest overreactions in 2018 training camp
The Dallas Cowboys heat is turning up. It’s easy to get mixed up with all the hype this time of year. Sure, football is back. But do we have overreactions?
I must confess, this isn’t my favorite time of the year in terms of the football season. Yes, Dallas Cowboys football is back. And don’t get me wrong here: I love seeing the silver and blue back on the screen. Nothing tops seeing that big old Star. Nothing.
But let’s not mix up the heat outside with what’s really going on. Yeah, the temperature outside is rising along with the sun. Football fans have empty stomachs, ready to consume on anything football related.
This is a dangerous time to eat some hype. I’m not trying to be a buzz kill here. But let’s be realistic about training camp. Until the Boys sport those beautiful Cowboys’ jerseys against a real team across from them in September, let’s dial it down a notch despite the rising sun.
Here are five of the biggest overreactions so far inside the Dallas Cowboys camp.
1. Earl Thomas to Dallas, now!
Obviously, you want your football cabinets full when the summer heat hits. The Dallas Cowboys and Earl Thomas connection won’t end until, well, it ends.
But right now, Thomas isn’t budging on getting his coin. The Cowboys deserve a lot of praise here. They are holding still, not flinching. Yes, the regular season is coming. However, this doesn’t mean that Dallas has to overstep their blueprint to land a top safety.
As the clock keeps ticking, the Cowboys are looking cleverer in the who blinked first game. So, no overreaction needed here. Let’s keep our first and second rounders. We learned from the Joey Galloway thingy, right?
2. The show stopper
Hello, Michael Gallup! And welcome.
After cutting Dez Bryant and losing Jason Witten to retirement, the Dallas Cowboys sure needed a boost in the passing game. Rookie third-rounder, Gallup, is stealing eyeballs in the passing game. This is a great sign.
But just a sign? For now, yes. Let’s see how the rookie fairs in the preseason and when things get real in Carolina for game one. Sure, we are galloping out of our seats for the next savior at the receiver spot. Again, it’s just camp time.
Wait for it a little.
3. Wearing down Zeke to geek
Anybody else has a problem with drowning Ezekiel Elliott with 2,000 rushing yards?
Look, the running back is looking trim and sleek for the 2018 campaign. Who could blame him after a headache of a season in 2017? But handing the ball over and over to the young back isn’t my idea of getting the most buck out your first round investment.
No question the back can handle the load. But, personally, I want Zeke to be around the Cowboys for a long, long time. Asking the back to accomplish 2,000 yards without a star receiver and tight end is a heavy load.
You know Zeke’s going to part of the passing game, so add those touches in too. Let’s spread his miles around, yeah?
4. It’s a brave new defensive world
Defensive back coach Kris Richard is stealing the headlines. I’m excited. I really am. If the Dallas Cowboys want a future in January, the defense has to get better.
Yes, we need another coming of the “Doomsday” defense. A modern-day, scary to the bone defense that scares offenses.
Are we there yet? Nope. But this young defensive back squad, led by Richard, is something to watch for this season and years to come. Let’s see how the draft picks grow this year. We’re talking about Chidobe Awuzie, Xavier Woods, Jourdan Lewis and Byron Jones here.
The future is bright. Yes, it is.
5. The first rule of Fight Club is…
It’s hard not to get football excited when you see the big boys battle and scrum after plays. Especially the feisty offensive line going at it with the d-line. I love it. Now, you love the energy, but at the same token, throwing a fist at Travis Frederick‘s helmet isn’t smart.
That action will land the dude in NFL’s Football Follies tape. Come on man, don’t be that guy. The Cowboys have the best offensive line in football. It’s a title they’ll have to fight for again this year. A fight in camp shows the passion, but that energy would be better used on game day.
Hold the punches, fellas. We know it’s hot out. But let’s um, know thy enemy.
