The Dallas Cowboys drafted wide receiver Michael Gallup in the third round. If he becomes the receiver the team envisioned, the team has a bright future.

The Dallas Cowboys wide receiving corps is amongst one of the most questioned position groups on the roster. Without big named stars of the past or present, the team is searching for a player to fit the bill as the ‘number one’ receiver.

If reports about receiver Michael Gallup’s performances in the early portions of camp are manifested in the 2018 season, the Cowboys are in great position to take the next step as annual Super Bowl contenders.

The team has three supposed areas of weakness on the roster for 2018. The teams best group of pass catchers, interior defensive lineman, and safety are yet to be determined. But if Gallup has a JuJu Smith-Schuster breakout campaign, the teams starting line up of Gallup, the reliable number two Allen Hurns, and slot man extraordinaire Cole Beasley will present quarterback Dak Prescott with a solid and dependable group.

This group along with any additional production and growth from speedy Tavon Austin and youngsters Cedrick Wilson and Noah Brown would fit the front office’s vision for a wide receiver group to a tee.

With free safety, interior lineman, and possibly tight end as the only places on the roster needing improvement, the team can go into the 2019 offseason knowing they are a few moves from annual Super Bowl contention. With Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas almost guaranteed to be a Cowboy by the beginning of next season, the team will only have two needs on their draft board; defensive tackle and tight end (assuming no free agents have been signed to take those spots).

In a 2019 draft filled with stud defensive tackles throughout the top 100, the team will have an abundance of options for the defensive tackle of the future. The team will also have five to seven picks to address the tight end position if needed, or simply draft the best player available if the tight end position is no longer a need.

If Gallup can ease the questions about the team’s wide receivers, then the team is suddenly free to use many resources for only one or two needs. Having an answer for the passing game can put the Cowboys in a tier amongst teams like Atlanta and New Orleans who have depth and talent in each position group, as well as no glaring weaknesses.

If that comes into fruition, Michael Gallup will be amongst the biggest steals of the 2018 draft.
