Will the Dallas Cowboys add another wide receiver soon?
The Dallas Cowboys wide receiver corps went through a flurry of changes this offseason. But are they done addressing the position?
Many seem to believe the Dallas Cowboys weakest positional group this summer is their wide receiver corps. Although I believe it’s actually their tight end unit, it’s easy to see why receiver is a major concern.
Just look at the Cowboys top three starters from last season. Dez Bryant is no longer on the roster following his unceremonious release by the team in April.
Terrance Williams is coming off a season where he failed to record a single touchdown. He also suffered a broken foot earlier this year and had that bizarre incident where he was arrested for public intoxication and leaving the scene of an accident.
Finally, there is Cole Beasley. Once believed to be one of the top slot receivers in the NFL, the 29-year old is coming off his worst season as a professional.
Now, throw in free agents like Allen Hurns, Tavon Austin, and Deonte Thompson, on top of rookie Michael Gallup, and this Cowboys wide receiver corps suddenly feels unstable.
Still, Dallas has plenty of bodies at the position. They are surely hoping a few of these guys step up in the next couple months to claim meaningful roles.
But Around The NFL Editor, Gregg Rosenthal doesn’t believe the Cowboys are done addressing the position of wide receiver yet. Here’s what he wrote recently for NFL.com.
"“Beasley should get plenty of time in the slot despite disappearing for much of the 2017 season. That leaves Hurns, Williams, Austin and Gallup, a third-round rookie, to fight for the rest of the snaps … This is a group that looks incomplete, still waiting for an in-camp trade or a pickup from another team’s roster cuts.”"
If the Cowboys intend on adding another wide receiver to the mix, it seems unlikely to come from the current crop of available free agents. The biggest names outside of Bryant being Eric Decker and Jeremy Maclin. Both players are over the age of 30, which is typically not the type of free agents the Cowboys sign. Trading for a receiver on the roster bubble elsewhere or adding a wideout that is suddenly released from another squad seems more plausible.
But I believe the reality is the Dallas Cowboys actually like the talent they currently have at the wide receiver position. If that opinion changes through training camp or into the preseason, I could see the Cowboys adding a castaway or two from other teams.
