Last year, the Dallas Cowboys were 13th in the NFL in defense but second in the NFC East. Can they build on this or will they fall behind in the division?

We all know that the Dallas Cowboys have always had up and down defenses. Dealing with a young secondary the Cowboys and injuries at the linebacker position it looked like another bad season.

To our surprise, the defense played well enough to rank 13th in the NFL and second in the NFC East. Showing signs of things to come in the future.

Now with the release of Orlando Scandrick and the loss of Anthony Hitchens. The Cowboys hope to recreate and build upon the success of this young unit.

Can they do it or will they fall back into the cycle we have grown accustomed too as Cowboy fans?

Let’s go team by team and see what defensive playmakers teams lost. Then take a look at who they added and give predictions on where they will rank this coming season.

Dallas Cowboys 2018 defensive ranking 13th, NFC East ranking second place

The Dallas Cowboys lost three players that at one point or another made an impact on the defense. Defensive end Benson Mayowa gave the team a pass rush at times when it was missing.

Linebacker Anthony Hitchens was the man who you knew when healthy was a force in the running game. Cornerback Orlando Scandrick was the veteran that helped keep the back end of the defense in position. The loss of these players all made contributions that will be missed.

The Cowboys also gained a few players during this time frame. Trading for Defensive tackle Jihad Ward and the signing of Defensive end Kony Ealy and franchise tag on DeMarcus Lawrence. The addition of these players along the defensive line will help this young secondary unit.

Prediction – Second Place in the NFC East
