After three years on the Dallas Cowboys practice squad, can converted quarterback Jameill Showers finally crack the active roster this season?

When the Dallas Cowboys signed Jameill Showers in May of 2015, the plan was for him to be a future possible replacement for veteran quarterback Tony Romo.

Showers played two years in college at UTEP at the quarterback position, and was an explosive dual threat on their offense.

The stats that Showers put up at UTEP didn’t blow anyone away. Throwing 11 touchdowns to four interceptions his junior year, and 12 touchdowns, 1,858 yards and six interceptions in his final year.

One thing that Showers always did have was athleticism and size (6-2, 222 pounds), which is most likely what the Cowboys were looking at when they signed him in 2015.

After the 2016 season and the emergence of Dak Prescott as the Cowboys franchise quarterback, Showers and the Cowboys made a decision to change his position to safety.

The UTEP product was actually cut by Dallas two times during the 2017 season, but was resigned to the practice squad on September 19th and remained there for the rest of the season.

As he comes into his fourth season as a pro, the question is whether Showers is ready to finally use his size and athletic ability to contribute.

As of today, the Dallas safety depth doesn’t look great, and there is a clear opportunity for Showers to claim a spot if he can produce.

Jeff Heath and Xavier Woods seem slated to be the Cowboys two starters at safety. But behind them on the depth chart there is not much else.

Kavon Frazier and Marqueston Huff will be Showers main competition to secure the backup safety spot, but no one is a lock for any position in the Dallas secondary.

Showers will have more experience with Dallas than the other two main competitors for the position, and this could benefit him greatly.
