Dallas Cowboys: Is Mychal Kendricks a fit for America’s Team?
The Dallas Cowboys have had a few injury problems at the linebacker position over the years. Signing Mychal Kendrick may be the right move.
We all know that the Dallas Cowboys drafted two linebackers in the draft this year in Leighton Vander Esch out of Boise State and Chris Covington out of Indiana.
We also know that the three potential starting linebackers all have had injury issues in the past. Sean Lee (hamstring and knee issues), Jaylon Smith (knee), and Vander Esch (neck). The addition of Mychal Kendrick would bring experience, speed and great position flex to the group.
Taking a look at Kendrick might be a good idea.
Kendrick was a potential target for the Dallas Cowboys in the 2012 draft was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the second round of the 2012 draft. He became a starter at the strong linebacker position. Kendrick started in 14 games and had 75 tackles, 1.0 sack, and nine passes defended.
After the firing of Andy Reid and hiring of Chip Kelly, Kendrick was moved to middle linebacker after the change in defensive scheme from their 4-3 defense to the 3-4 defense. Kendrick then became one of the starting middle linebackers where he put up impressive numbers. In 40 games he racked up 278 tackles, 11 sacks, 11 passes defended, three interceptions, and six forced fumbles.
Then in 2016, Kendrick went through his third coaching change after the firing of Chip Kelly and hiring of Doug Pederson. He then changed position again moving from middle linebacker back to weakside linebacker. Where he saw less playing time under new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. In 30 games, Kendrick had 101 tackles, seven passes defended, and 2.0 sacks.
Now released, Kendrick will garner a lot of attention on the free agent market. The Dallas Cowboys have an opportunity to get a player that they liked in the past. Only time will tell if they are willing to pull the trigger on a deal.
