Following his arrest on Saturday morning, is Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrance Williams in danger of losing his job in Big D?

Update: Terrance Williams released a statement through his attorney on Saturday night, clearing up many of the details surrounding the accident and the arrest that follow. We’ll include it below.

Here’s our original story that was posted Saturday afternoon, prior to the release of the above statement.

What’s that old saying about idle hands?  On Saturday morning, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrance Williams was arrested in Frisco, Texas for suspicion of misdemeanor public intoxication according to NFL.com. That was after William’s unoccupied blue 2017 Lamborghini was found wrapped around a light pole near the Cowboys’ training facility.

Williams himself was arrested by police a couple hours later near his home, riding an electric bicycle. It is being investigated whether the sixth-year receiver fled the scene of the accident. If so, Williams could be facing more charges.

The 28-year old wide out has been unable to participate in the Cowboys’ voluntary workouts as of late due to him recovering from a broken foot, an injury he suffered earlier this year.

Last March, Williams signed a very team-friendly four-year, $17 million contract in order to stay in Dallas. And with the Cowboys parting ways with longtime starter Dez Bryant this offseason, the former third round selection out of Baylor has his first real opportunity to win the top role within Dallas’ receiver corps.

Unfortunately, this arrest casts a stain on what has otherwise been a spotless NFL career off-the-field. On it, Williams has been plagued by inconsistency. The five-year veteran continues to struggle to get separation from defenders while also being labeled as primarily a body-catcher.

In the past few seasons as the team’s number two wide receiver, Williams has failed to show up when the Cowboys have really needed him. Specifically, whenever Bryant has been injured or less than 100% physically, Terrance tends to disappear.

With the Cowboys, Williams has averaged 46 receptions for 672 yards and four scores every year. Last season, the veteran wide out posted a career-high 53 catches. But Williams also recorded career-lows in receiving yards (568) and touchdowns (zero).

As far as his status with the Cowboys following his arrest, Williams current salary makes it difficult for the team to cut him. There is simply no benefit financially in doing so, as his full $3.5 million paycheck for this season is fully guaranteed no matter what.

But the Dallas Cowboys are also going through a major transition at the wide receiver position, with many new faces expected to make significant contributions in 2018. Terrance Williams’ value has certainly taken a hit following this latest news, and could potentially put his job in jeopardy in Dallas regardless of his salary.
