It’s time for some Dallas Cowboys spring cleaning. Here are five thoughts I have in the middle of May, from Jason Witten to Dez Bryant. Enjoy the list.

As the sun hangs around longer during the day, with the temperature needle moving north, it can only mean one thing: The Dallas Cowboys football program is underway.

With the rookies signing their contracts, and veterans trekking into 2018, it’s really an exciting time because these vital moments lead us to the September storms. Well actually, it turns out Cowboys Nation had a surprising side storm this month as well.

Forgive me, but I’m still getting over the fact that Jason Witten won’t be in a Dallas Cowboys uniform.

Sure, it’s going to take some time. But, I thought that with him on board in April, heading into the NFL Draft, we could count on 82 one more time for the 2018 campaign.

With that in mind, here are five thoughts I have in the middle of May.

Dez Bryant

It’s been a little over a month since the Dallas Cowboys released Dez Bryant. Since then, the Cowboys have drafted some talent in the NFL Draft, clearly in “moving on” mode.

Bryant though remains a free agent. Outside of a multi-year contract offer from the Baltimore Ravens, the former 88 is still looking for work.

At first, it was shocking to see the Cowboys walk away from him. To boot, they didn’t even offer a pay cut. They just said bye. This makes you wonder: Are all 32 teams in agreement with Bryant’s ability and attitude?

There’s no question Bryant will find a job. He’s still too good not to land a job. It’s just a matter of when.

Captain America

You get the feeling that Jason Witten was just as loved as quarterback Roger Staubach back in his day. The Cowboys had a golden era of players, from Tony Romo to Jason Witten, to even Dez Bryant and the offensive line, which is still in place.

The Cowboys couldn’t crown Romo, Witten or Bryant during their time in Big D. But maybe it’s Witten’s legacy that pushes this era over the hump. Witten leaves the game with a brilliant blueprint on how to play the game.

It’s up to the Boys to read it and follow it.

The new guy

I don’t know how I feel about linebacker Leighton Vander Esch. Yet.

Like many, I thought the Cowboys would go wide receiver with the 19th overall pick. I’m not against the pick; I just really hope this guy comes close to being the Brian Urlacher type everyone keeps talking about.

Heck, I think we’ll settle for a competent and healthy Rolando McClain type. I get that losing Anthony Hitchens was a big deal. I just thought to let Dez Bryant go meant filling a bigger hole over there.

But, the Cowboys need to get better on defense, and that Boise State player could do some damage right away.

No Dak love

There really isn’t a quarterback out there that could satisfy Dallas Cowboys fans. Let’s be real here: Dak is the new Tony.

The young fella earned NFL Rookie of the Year Award in 2016, played pretty darn well in 2017, but there are some already calling for his head.

Yes, I saw the dink and dunk throws. The screens and inaccuracy.

But let’s give the young gun another year. At the very least, give the dude September and October before calling Vinny Testaverde. Cool?

Tavon Austin = Lance Dunbar

I get that the Dallas Cowboys wanted to reproduce Lance Dunbar’s role in Big D. But isn’t it a bit off to say Austin is the same as Dunbar?

Austin was a former first rounder, and from what I can see, is a very dynamic player with game-changing ability.

Seeing him in the backfield and returning kicks will be a show. I think he’ll be a great gear changer in ways Dunbar could never accomplish.
