As the Dallas Cowboys embark upon offseason minicamps, let’s take a few moments to review the best moves from the 2018 offseason … so far.

The first session of voluntary Organized Team Activities for the Dallas Cowboys gets underway in just over a week. When those who report show up, there will be plenty of new faces to meet for those who were in 2017.

Depending on how you see the roster shaping up, there could be as many as 17 new players to don the Star on their helmet.

Change is normal in the NFL. Turning over almost a third of your roster after winning 22 games in two seasons is a little less normal, however.

Today, we’ll take a look at what I consider to be the four best moves of the offseason, to this point, for the Dallas Cowboys.

We will start with one of the biggest reasons why this team did not make the playoffs in 2017.

Depth at a crucial position

Last year, the Cowboys were riding a three game winning streak, sitting at 5-3 heading in to mid-October. Two things took place that took the wheels right off this team’s caravan of positivity.

The biggest fly in the ointment was undoubtedly the suspension of Ezekiel Elliott. While missing Elliott was clearly detrimental, an injury to All-Pro left tackle Tyron Smith was also crippling.

Without those two in the starting lineup, the Cowboys scored one touchdown… in two games. The drought of scoring continued into game three as Smith was working his way back. With three straight losses, Dallas found themselves at 5-6 with little shot at a playoff spot.

This year, the Cowboys made a point to bolster the offensive line to better withstand injury to one of their stars on that unit.

Cameron Fleming and Marcus Martin were brought in via free agency.  While neither is on the level of the “Fab Four” starters on this squad, they represent major upgrades relative to depth. Both have 20+ career starts in the NFL. Both are also on the young side, at 26 and 24 respectively.

Fleming also has the experience of starting in a Super Bowl and participating in two others, which not many Cowboys can say.

The Cowboys also used a second round draft to bolster this unit which is the perfect segue into the next best aspect of their offseason.
