2018 NFL Draft: Dallas Cowboys select Dorance Armstrong 116th overall
The Dallas Cowboys opened Day Three of the 2018 NFL Draft by addressing a need at their defensive end position. Let’s break the pick down.
The Dallas Cowboys entered the 2018 NFL Draft with linebacker, offensive guard and wide receiver as pressing needs for their team. And after three rounds, each one of those needs were addressed.
The Cowboys now have seven picks to use on Day Three, including two selections in the fourth round. With the first of those two picks, Dallas elected to add another edge rusher to their building roster.
With the 116th overall selection in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys select …
NAME: Dorance Armstrong
POSITION: Edge Rusher
SCHOOL: Kansas
HT/WT: 6-3, 257 pounds
AGE: 20-years old
2017 STATS: 63 tackles, 9.0 tfls, 1.5 sacks, 3 ffs, 4 pds
PROS: Long arms, high-motor, plays with violence, traits, speed
CONS: Slight frame, undersized, lack of power
ANALYSIS: The Dallas Cowboys used their first round selection in 2017 on a defensive end in Taco Charlton. The Cowboys continued to build that positional group in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft with the selection of Armstrong here. The Kansas defender projects to be a right end in the Cowboys 4-3, likely allowing Charlton to backup DeMarcus Lawrence at left end.
Armstrong appears to be a Rod Marinelli-guy, a high motor player who will give his all through the whistle. Had a better sophomore year posting 10.0 sacks and 20.0 tackles for loss.
The rookie joins a defensive line room with several questions about the position, particularly surrounding the futures of Charles Tapper and Randy Gregory. At the end of the day, you can never have enough pass rusher. And Armstrong appears to be a great value in the fourth round.
