Dallas Cowboys: 15 best first-round picks of all-time
By John Buhler
Best first-round draft picks in Dallas Cowboys history: 6. Michael Irvin
At No. 6 on this list, we will mention the first of The Triplets that helped the Cowboys win three Super Bowls in four years in the 1990s. During the 1988 NFL Draft, the Cowboys got their star wide receiver they needed in the form of Michael Irvin of the Miami Hurricanes. Dallas took him at No. 11 and never looked back.
The Cowboys might have struggled mightily in his first few years in the league, but Irvin broke out in a big way in year four with Dallas. In 1991, he made his first of five straight trips to the Pro Bowl. He would earn First-Team All-Pro honors during that season. Irvin would be twice named a Second-Team All-Pro during that five-year window.
Dallas would win three Super Bowls with Irvin as its star wide receiver. Irvin would spend his entire 12-year NFL career with the Cowboys, retiring after the 1999 NFL season. He would be named to the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team and is in the Cowboys Ring of Honor.
Irvin had over 1,000 receiving yards in a season seven times. In 2007, Irvin would be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. His Pro Football Hall of Fame classmates include Cleveland Browns guard Gene Hickerson, Buffalo Bills running back Thurman Thomas and St. Louis Football Cardinals cornerback Roger Wehrli.
