What is the Dallas Cowboys plan at safety in 2018?
With the draft only a couple weeks away the Dallas Cowboys have attempted to address a majority of their weaknesses via free agency. But why not safety?
Going into this offseason and looking at areas the Dallas Cowboys needed to upgrade, it would be hard to leave safety off that list. As the Cowboys are getting closer to wrapping up their free agency pursuits and finalizing their pre-draft visits, safety still remains a question mark.
To add even more unpredictability to their current safety group, it appears former first round pick Byron Jones will be moving back to corner for 2018 where he spent a good portion of his rookie season. Losing Jones, being he is the most seasoned and established safety out of this young group, certainly leaves a glaring hole on the back end.
We saw significant strides made by second year safety Kavon Frazier last year; albeit in mostly limited action. Fellow safety Jeff Heath has certainly made a name for himself among Cowboys fans for some of the big plays he has been involved in the last two seasons.
And rookie safety Xavier Woods has shown he will be a major part of their rebuilt young secondary. While Woods will play a major role for the Cowboys going forward, will the same be said for Frazier and Heath?
The lack of attention to the safety position via free agency has to be somewhat puzzling given the names that are still available. The Cowboys completely whiffed on their non-pursuit of Tyrann Mathieu due to their belief of what his market value would be.
Safeties Tre Boston, Eric Reid, and Kenny Vaccaro would be more proven commodities than the likes of Heath and Frazier and their asking price could be going down the further we get into free agency.
Another possibility could be the Cowboys are planning to overhaul their safety position via the draft much like they did with their cornerbacks in last years draft. And if we really want to look at all possibilities, could the Cowboys be keeping the door open for possibly acquiring Earl Thomas from the Seahawks?
